By now its fair to say everyone has heard of the Ketogenic diet. It has been a popular weight loss diet for many years. Diets that are high in carbohydrates trigger large increases in the insulin, and can promote fat storage. Substituting fats for carbohydrates increases fat oxidation and promotes fat loss.

A study led by National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases showed that weight loss was similar during ketogenic diets and mixed diets. However energy expenditure was slightly higher with the ketogenic diet. The findings have cast some doubt on ketogenic diets for weight loss.
